Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlu and Dr. Satyapal
Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlu and Dr. Satyapal were renowned national leaders of the city of Amritsar. Dr. Kitchlu, had taken a degree at Munster Univercity in Germany and was practicing at Amritsar Bar since 1915. Dr. Satyapal, aged 33, was a B.A., M.B. of Panjab University and had held the Viceroy’s Commision as a Lieutenant in the Indian Medical Service.
On April 9, 1919 a procession was taken out by the people of Amritsar. The British Government ordered the arrest of Dr. Kitchlu and Dr. Satyapal. The news of thier arrest evoked strong reaction among the people of Amritsar. On April 10, 1919 disorder broke out in Amritsar resulting in sack of bank buildings and destruction of telegraphy and railway communications. Dr. Kitchlu and Satyapal were interned at Dharmsala. Later on, they were tried along with fifteen others before Mr Justice Broadway. Dr. Kitchlu, Dr. Satyapal, Badr-ul-Islam Ali Khan, Mohd. Bashir, Kotu Mal, Narain Das Khanna, Gurdial Singh, Bhawan Nand, Dina Nath, Gurbaksh Rai, Ghulam Nabi, Ghulam Mohd., Abdul Aziz, Mohd. Ismail and Moti Ram Mehra were charged under Sections 121-121A, 124-!, 396,147,302, 326,50,426 and 124-A, 147, 436,30, 120B, 506 I.P.C. The allegations against them was that they were leaders of the movement culminated on the 10th April in the act of waging war against the British Government. Dr. Kitchlu and Dr. Satyapal were sentenced to transportation for life. Dr. Mohd. Bashir was sentenced to death
