Gandhi and Quit India Movement

Gandhi lost his leadership in June, 1940 and again on 23  Dec 1941. He wrote an article in Harijan on 19 April 1942 in which he suggested that the safety and interest of Both Britain and India lie in orderly and timely withdrawal of British rule from India.
Gandhi, for the first time , openly declared that there was an end of all ideas of co-operation or friendly understanding between Britain and India which Subhas had persistently tried to make the Congress adopt this policy, but failed. All the Congress leaders took the opinion of Gandhi excepting Jawahar Lal who was still in favour of British. The two ideas clashed in the W.C. at Allahabad (29 April to 2 May 1942) and the draft by Jawaharlal , with some amendment , was accepted rejecting Gandhi's resolution. But Gandhi again recovered his leadership over the Congress to implement his idea of "Quit India" movement.  He said on 24 th May , 1942, "Leave India in God's Hand"
Azad, , in a W.C. meeting 6th July, 1942, expressed the idea of "Quit India Movement" as  conceived by Gandhi, that he had no clear idea about the programme but mentioned that this time the people would not court imprisonment voluntarily . They should resist arrest and submit to Government only if physically forced to do so.
Referring to the resolution of "Quit India"

On 14 th July , 1942, the Working Committee passed a long resolution of "Quit India" with details of programme to be undertaken after their withdrawal which was finally approved at thd A.I.C.C. meeting at Bombay on 7 August 1942.
But the Govt. suddenly removed all the leaders upto Taluk level in cluding Gandhi, Nehru , Azad etc.
